Ritchies “plastic stripe guitars” in end of Mk2 and Mk3.

Ritchie Blackmore really liked the features of the new Fender Stratocaster models, which have been released around mid 1971. With the new tilt adjust neck feature Ritchie will experiment on his next two Strats, with tilting the neck the tone gets somewhat thinner and more percussive while the action gets higher compared to a regular Strat with the traditional four-screw neck attachment, something that Ritchie liked as well. Ritchie used the tilt back feature excessively while the neck had a beefy neck heel. Because of this the screws from the saddles for the height adjustment were to short so Ritchie used a 1/8" thick white plastic strip and put it under the saddles to raise the action. On his new 72' Sunburst Strat that Ritchie played as a substitute for the "Machine Head" Strat that has been damaged in the summer of 1972 until the end of the Mk2 era this plastic strip extended over the six tremolo attachment screws. On his late 72' natural ash bodied Strat which he used over the complete Mk3 era as well as the beginnings from the Rainbow period, the plastic strip was noticeably shorter, ending in front of the six tremolo attachment screws, measuring 2 ¾“ x ¾“ x 1/8“. On all later Strats Ritchie preferred a noticeably lower action for more sustain which was helpful for his Rainbow playing.
