ENGL Power Amp - Meiser Mod [PDF]

[Deutsche Version unten]:

Here a ENGL Ritchie Blackmore Signature modification to make it more flexible and especially to get the desired classic DP Mk2&3 sounds together with BSM stompboxes.

Warning:

All tube amplifiers contain lethal voltages. The most dangerous voltages are stored in electrolytic capacitors, even after the amp has been unplugged from the wall. Before you touch anything inside the amp chassis, it’s imperative that these capacitors are discharged. If you are unsure of this procedure, consult your local amp tech.

Pull the power-tubes from the chassis and store them away in order. This is mandatory in order to tilt the loosen mainboard later on, containing the tube sockets and so the power- tubes too, preventing this process. With careful handling the pre-amp tubes can all stay in place.

Put the open chassis with the tubes facing down on your workspace so you look at the control knobs. You now see the mainboard that is secured with some nuts and plastic PCB stand-offs. The front left nut is not involved in securing the chassis but for clamping down the transistor and its heatsink. Pull the knobs from the controls and loose the hex nuts from the pots, holding the control panel. Remove the angle plate covering the input jack before you remove it. Now you can tilt the mainboard to a certain degree, making it possible to work on it.

The left pre-amp tube is noted as V1A in the drawing, the third tube from the left is the driver tube V3 - that ́s our starting point. At the V3 both cathodes are connected together, followed by three resistors against ground.

Presence Mod: this is basically interchanging two resistors (R49 and R50), resulting in a reduced but more practical "Presence" compared to the stock very high tuning. Solder R49 (1k5) to position R50 and R50 (3k3) to position R49 - done! Because of the dual- layer layout of the mainboard it ́s worth to think about soldering the two resistors to the PCB layout side to make later mods much easier, especially if you want to remove the mod. This way you don ́t need to tilt the mainboard again.

Overdrive Mod: connected to pin #3 (cathode) of the V2B triode you can see a resistor (R23) and an electrolytic capacitor (CE5). First remove the electrolytic capacitor. Next replace the cathode resistor R23 with 820 ohms. As an alternative you can leave R23 untouched by soldering an additional 2.2kOhm across R23 in parallel on the PCB side.

Gain Mod: change the cathode and anode resistors connected to the V2A triode following the drawing.

Crunch Mod: follow the trace from pin #7 of the triode V2a, it is routed across some 220kOhm resistors to a white 3.3nF capacitor. On the PCB side solder another 3.3nF/100v cap in parallel across the stock one.

Lead Mod: on the PCB side solder additional caps in parallel across the two 680pF ceramic caps, following the drawing.
Now the mods on the mainboard are finished and we continue with mods on the already accessible control-panel PCB. Take care to not bend the ribbon cable on the side of the control-panel PCB to avoid the individual strands from breaking - always lay them as smooth as possible and in a round circle. Analyzing broken strands in a ribbon cable is far away from having fun.

Clean Mod: look for the 1nF capacitor C3 near and in front of the clean pot, take care to not mix it up with the capacitor C2. On the PCB side solder a 4.7nF/100v cap in parallel across C3

Now let ́s have a look at the tone stack.

Tone Stack mod: look for the switchable 220pF capacitor C12, on the PCB side solder a 220pF cap in parallel across the stock one. As an alternative you can remove C12 and replace it with a 470pF or 500pF cap. As an optional mod, you can solder a 150pF cap in parallel across the switchable capacitor C9 on the PCB side.

Ultra Linear Mod: this is the final optional mod for the amp, on the upper edge of the mainboard you will find a small trace, feeding the four 470 ohm screen grid resistors coming from the left, through an axial electrolytic capacitor resting on the left side of the mainboard. Cut the left feeding of this trace and cut it again between the two power-tube pairs, afterwards the two screen grid resistors for each power-tube pair are no longer connected. Next follow the anode wire from the left power-tube pair to the OT and look for the soldering spot of this wire on the OT. Between this soldering spot and the primary central connection of the OT in the middle you will find an unused soldering spot. Solder a high-voltage wire from this soldering spot to the two screen grid resistors for the left power-tube pair. Now follow the anode wire coming from the right power-tube pair to the OT and look for the soldering spot of this wire there. Between this soldering spot and the primary central connection of the OT in the middle you will find another unused soldering spot. Solder a high-voltage wire from this soldering spot to the two screen grid resistors for the right power-tube pair. Now the power-tubes are running in ultra-linear mode, exactly like the Marshall Major and Minor amps. This mod is only for advanced modders, you should exactly know what you are doing here.

If you have any questions ........

RitchieBlackmore sig. Modifikation
